HSS Hand Tap Features and Material Grades

Features and options are discussed against the material, thread, hole and production requirement. No tool-life, breakage or cost-saving result is guaranteed without relevant evidence.

01

HSS grade options

Discuss M2, M35 or M42 according to the application and material.

02

Material compatibility

Steel, aluminium, brass and selected alloys may be suitable; confirm the workpiece grade and hardness before choosing a tap.

03

Ground-thread finish

Precision-ground threads support controlled thread formation; confirm dimensional requirements against the drawing.

04

Straight-flute options

Listed 4- or 6-flute configurations; availability depends on selected size.

05

Chip management

Chip behavior depends on hole type and thread depth. Confirm the tapping sequence and clear chips as appropriate for the operation.

06

Manual control

Use a suitable tap wrench and maintain alignment in a prepared hole.

07

Custom enquiries

Review non-standard sizes, lengths or drawing requirements for feasibility.

08

Quotation clarity

Know the thread.
Specify it clearly.

For HSS taps and dies, metric pitch is measured in millimetres; inch threads are usually specified in TPI (threads per inch).

How to read an order size

  • M10 × 1.5: 10 mm nominal diameter, 1.5 mm pitch.
  • 1/2″–13 UNC: 1/2 inch nominal diameter, 13 TPI, UNC thread.
  • Pitch in mm = 25.4 ÷ TPI.
  • RH / LH: right-hand / left-hand thread.
  • Pipe sizes are nominal: a 1/2″ BSP or NPT thread does not have a 12.7 mm outside diameter.

Unified thread families are covered by ASME B1.1. This practical industry list includes common metric, Unified, British and pipe series; it is not every specialist thread standard worldwide.

Buyer questions

HSS Hand Tap Frequently Asked Questions

What is an HSS hand tap used for?

Creating internal threads in prepared holes during suitable manual threading operations.

What details are needed for a quote?

Thread size and pitch, quantity, material, tolerance, hole type, depth and any special dimensions or coating.

Which material grade should I choose?

Share the application details first. Grade selection needs review rather than a universal recommendation.

Can it be used for volume nut production?

Not automatically. A dedicated nut tap or machine tap may be more appropriate for repeated production.

Can you review custom lengths and special sizes?

Yes. Submit a drawing or clear specification for feasibility and quotation.

What are the price, MOQ and lead time?

These are confirmed in a current quotation for the selected configuration.

Can export buyers enquire?

Yes. Include destination, documents, quantities and delivery requirements.

Are these automatically aerospace-approved?

No blanket approval is claimed. Specific qualification, traceability and inspection requirements must be reviewed.
